When a song is a story #2: A Dark Place

I have been thinking more about stories in songs and to contrast to my last offering From Little Things Big Things Grow which is uplifting, I thought – let us go visit the dark side and my personal king of darkness Nick Cave.  His album Murder Ballads  has a enough dark stories for any fan of the macabre.

Ballads I have discovered, originated in France as dance songs. I was weaned on bush ballads like Waltzing Matilda -the alternative and preferred Australian National Anthem. A dark song that incidentally could easily fit the theme of Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads.

I digress.  The absolute genius of pairing Nick Cave and pop princess Kylie Minogue leads to Where the Wild Roses Grow – a haunting song and story. A thing of beauty.
