You can eat Nasturtiums!

When I was at boarding school we laughed at the weird girl who ate the wild nasturtiums. What nasty teenagers we were as well as uninformed.

As you know, I plant things at the wrong time and in the wrong place all the time.  When I go to the Fernvale Markets I try and try to stick to my list of the right things to plant. But then I see nasturtiums and I get excited.  I get home and my handy Organic Vegetable Gardening book says, in hot climates, I should plant in cooler months.  Of course, it is the middle of summer.

I planted my two plants anyhow. One a little shady and one a bit sunny. I lost the one in the sunnier position. The one is the shade did OK, and then winter came and it flourished. Now as we move into spring it is still looking lovely. It will be interesting to see what happens when the weather sizzles.

If you live in a cooler climate nasturtiums are for all year round. It a hot climate like mine you can maybe nurse it through to summer. They don’t need much love.

And yes, you can eat the leaves and the flowers.
