Custard Apples: How to win friends and influence people

IMG_7912There are two types of people in the world. People who love custard apples and people who had never heard of them. Those who love custard apples have a problem. You can’t easily buy them.

I can understand why. They are nobbly and misshapen which must make them hard to box up and transport. They have a short shelf life. One day they are not ready, the next day they are, the next day is your last chance to eat them before they are overripe.

There are people in my life who are only friends with me because I bring them custard apples. Honest, they speak to me for 10 months of the year on the off chance that in late winter I will bring them custard apples.

I find the tree easy to maintain. I keep the water up to it when it is hot and throw some fertiliser on through spring and summer (when I remember). It does not need any particular attention – no trimming other than getting rid of the dead wood.

Inside, the soft white flesh tastes sweet and a bit like custard. Eat it with a teaspoon and spit out the black seeds. That is if you are lucky enough to get a chance to try one!

  1. I think there might be three types of people in the world – your two, and people like me (that is, those who think custard apples are OK but who love custard apple trees. My favourite childhood climbing tree was a custard apple tree. Mum loved the fruit but I really just loved the tree.)
